SMART SCALE Round 5 Projects

Last year marked the fifth application round of SMART SCALE, Virginia’s system of scoring, ranking and selecting transportation projects for funding.  Working collaboratively with VDOT and the MPO localities, MPO staff prepared and submitted final applications for traffic flow improvements at the intersection of Millwood Pike at Front Royal Pike and I-81, and a re-design of the Route 11 interchange at I-81 Exit 317.  The projects were scoped through VDOT’s Project Pipeline, a program for targeting and addressing needs identified in VTrans, Virginia’s statewide transportation plan.  The Exit 317 proposal is recommended for funding by the state Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment; at $37 million, the second largest request among the 152 applications making the cut.  The Commonwealth Transportation Board will make its final funding decisions in June.

Virginia’s SMART SCALE Program uses a transparent and objective evaluation process in order to distribute transportation funds statewide. For the most up to date program changes, please see the presentation by VDOT Assistant District Planner, Brad Reed.
